Electrical emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. A whole-house power loss, a consumer unit that trips the moment you reset it, a socket that is hot to the touch or a burning smell from behind a switch all need a qualified electrician quickly — both to make the installation safe and to get you back up and running.
Our emergency service is focused on two things: making the installation safe on the first visit, and finding the actual cause of the fault rather than simply resetting a breaker and leaving. Where a permanent repair can be completed there and then, we'll do it. Where it can't — for example, if a consumer unit needs replacing — we'll make the circuit safe, explain your options clearly and agree the next step with you before any further work.
When to call us
- Total or partial loss of power that isn't a network power cut
- Consumer unit (fuse box) tripping repeatedly or refusing to reset
- Burning smell, buzzing or crackling from sockets, switches or the fuse board
- Scorch marks, melted plugs or sockets that feel hot
- Sparking when a plug is inserted or a switch is used
- Water leak near electrics, light fittings or the consumer unit
- Exposed or damaged cables after DIY, building work or a fall
- Loss of power to a fridge, freezer, heating or medical equipment
What's involved
- 1Telephone triage and safety advice while you wait
- 2Safe isolation of the affected circuit(s)
- 3Systematic fault finding and insulation resistance testing
- 4Like-for-like repair of failed accessories, connections and cables where practical
- 5Clear explanation of the cause and any further work needed
- 6Appropriate certification for completed work
Good to know
Is it a power cut or a fault?
If neighbours have also lost power, it is likely a network fault. In Great Britain you can call 105 free to reach your local electricity network operator. If only your property is affected, or your consumer unit has tripped, it is likely a fault inside the property.
Staying safe until we arrive
If you smell burning or see smoke, switch off at the main switch on the consumer unit if it is safe to do so and do not touch damaged fittings. If there is fire, leave the property and call 999.
Water and electricity
If water is coming through a ceiling near a light fitting, switch off at the main switch if you can reach it without standing in water, and don't use the lights on that circuit until it has been tested.
How much does an emergency electrician cost?
Every job is different, so we price it once we understand what's needed. The main factors are:
- Time of day and day of the week you need us
- Travel distance to your property
- How long it takes to find the fault
- Parts needed to make safe or repair
- Whether a permanent repair can be completed on the first visit
We explain charges before we attend and agree the price of any work with you before it starts. Sending photos in advance helps us quote more accurately.
Emergency Electrician: FAQs
What counts as an electrical emergency?
Anything that presents an immediate risk of fire, shock or loss of essential power: burning smells, sparking, scorching, water in electrics, exposed live cables, or a total loss of power you can't restore by resetting the consumer unit.
How quickly can you attend?
Response times depend on where you are and how many urgent jobs are already booked. Call us and we'll give you an honest arrival estimate before you commit — we won't promise a time we can't meet.
How much does an emergency call-out cost?
We'll explain our call-out and labour charges on the phone before we attend, so there are no surprises. Parts and any further work are agreed with you before they're carried out.
My fuse box keeps tripping — can I just keep resetting it?
No. A breaker or RCD that trips repeatedly is doing its job: detecting a fault. Repeatedly resetting it can make things worse. Unplug appliances on that circuit and try once; if it still trips, leave it off and call an electrician.
